Britt5091 Origins: Guitar Hero-ness

Welcome to Britt5091: Origins, where I dig up old blog posts I used to write for IGN’s community under the username Britt5091. Some posts may make you giggle, some may make your eyes bleed, and some may make you stroke your beard in a pensive manner. All you need to know is that these posts, no matter how terrible some of them may be, ultimately lead to everything I do now.

Guitar Hero-ness

June 7, 2009

Sooo it’s Saturday night, you live in a college town…what do you do??

What was that one quote made by a certain staff at IGN? “Do you hear that? That is the sound of a franchise being milked.” HAHAHA…so true. I like Guitar Hero don’t get me wrong(I only have GH 3, Aerosmith and WT)..but it seems like World Tour just freakin’ released! I want to say last October?? Though it will be roughly a year then when GH: 5 releases(September 09). Maybe it feels this way because the other GH games announced/released since then. GH:Metallica is out there and Greatest Hits comes out in a few weeks, right?

Personally I would have been happy if new songs just continued to be released via download. Because really, and this is my opinion, I don’t need a “drop in drop out” mode, that “fire notes band play” or all that spiffy head-to-head jazz. Just give me a guitar, songs and I’m good to go. Isn’t that what hooked players in the first place? Or was it the new concept of playing an instrument and making you feel like a badass? Is it that gamers are getting bored with that simple concept and Activision is scrambling for ways to keep them hooked? If this isn’t the case then I don’t see why a new game is necessary, just keep the downloads coming. Unless these modes are something fans have been screaming/looking for.

Now if you don’t have downloading capabilities I understand that this is the only way for you to obtain new songs. Or if you have a “Guitar Hero Clan” and you play a butt-ton maybe these new modes made you wet your pants. But hell I guess it all comes down to making money and Activision is obviously doing a good job.

I’m not going to pretend that I am a Guitar Hero Guru and cannot speak for the overall fanbase, in fact I’m pretty sure I’d be classified as a casual gamer to this franchise, (I can play half the songs in expert at least lol) I’m curious to see if maybe I’m just downplaying GH5 and wonder how everyone else feels about it? (I tried checking the forums but c’mon it always turns into a flame war between Rock Band and Guitar Hero.)

Britt’s Note:

Yeah, how about that Guitar Hero? Too bad the franchise was canned not long ago. Wait, did I say too bad? I did, huh? I didn’t mean it.

Clearly that franchise was milked to shit, and once Activision had screwed her for all she was worth they dumped her in a cold and dreary alley. She spent the remaining years of her life drifting from home to home, pleading for a warm bed. Unfortunately, she was frequently turned away, her dismissal oftentimes accompanied with a disgusted look, but every now and then someone would remember the good times; someone would realize that it really wasn’t her fault that she was whored out, and they would take her in. They would spend the night together, laughing and participating in ludicrous tomfoolery. Then morning would come and the person, the sympathizer, who had had a gracious heart only the night before, would kick her to the streets. She would remember this home; and she would return once a year, and they would yet again find comfort and entertainment in each other’s company. However, she would always find herself back on the streets when the sun rose. It was a vicious cycle, but one that she was accustomed to.

Wow. I think I just the most ridiculous symbolic short story in the history of the world.

Go me!
