Why I STILL Don’t Have a Nintendo 3DS

Remember several weeks ago when I posted the article “Why I Don’t Have a 3DS”? No? Read it here.

Since Ocarina of Time 3DS releases THIS FRIGGEN’ WEEKEND, I should have a brand-spankin-new 3DS in my possession no later than Sunday at noon. Why noon? Well you see, I plan on getting plastered Saturday night, so I need to accommodate for that.

So, right. I SHOULD HAVE A BRAND-SPANKIN-NEW 3DS IN MY POSSESSION THIS WEEKEND.

But guys! I’m not…oh, this pains me to say it….

…I’m not all that excited and/or anxious to pick it up. GAAAAAAH ::bashes head into wall::

Let me tell you why.

There are other game I sorta-kinda want

I still have the Best Buy gift cards I’ve been hoarding since Christmas. The idea was to save them specifically for Ocarina of Time and the 3DS, but there are a LOT (and I mean a LOT) of games coming down the pike, not to mention a lot of games that have already released that I want so hard. After I finish inFamous, I’m going to want inFamous 2. I just finished Portal last week, and I want to try Portal 2. Let’s not forget about L.A. Noire. So you see, there are three games I could pick up for free if I wanted to. And you know what? I kind of want to.

Deep down, I was hoping for a spiffy Legend of Zelda themed 3DS

If I don’t purchase a 3DS on Sunday, this will probably be the biggest reason. I mean c’mon, it would have made perfect sense. We’re celebrating Zelda’s 25th anniversary, not to mention the re-release of Ocarina of Time on a relatively new handheld. SO…what gives, Nintendo? If a gold-plated 3DS sporting a Triforce had been announced at E3, I would have pre-ordered one faster than you can say “ZOMGADULTLINKIN3DISSODREAMY”. JUST SAYING, Nintendo, just saying.

Chances are I won’t play it

Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s fan-fucking-tastic one of my favorite games is being re-released in 3D (with all the fixins). And hey, I’ve played with the 3DS and I’ve played around with the OoT remake. They’re great. But you know what? I’ve played this game on other platforms several hundred thousand times. Even though Nintendo announced a fun 3DS line-up (Super Mario, Super Mario Kart, Luigi’s Mansion 2, etc) those are also games I’ve played several hundred thousand times. And I know myself. I don’t play handhelds outside of travel. I find them perfect for those tedious airport waits and airplane rides, and great for killing a few minutes in a hotel room. But when I’m home, I’d rather experience something new (like inFamous or L.A. Noire) on my 46” HDTV.

Do I sense a price cut?

You may have heard of a little device called PSVita Pita Pocket (God, I love calling it that). You may have also heard that it’s retailing for the EXACT SAME PRICE as a Nintendo 3DS. Uh, wait. So, I could have a mini-portable PlayStation 3 that sports games like, I don’t know, UNCHARTED in my purse? Let’s face it, when you compare the specs for these two side to side, Sony has Nintendo beat…and trust me, I say that from neutral, untainted ground. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo drops the price of the 3DS in the not-so-distant future.

Bottom line: I’ll eventually own a 3DS; it’s in my blood as a fanatical gamer and game collector. But holy hell, those bad boys are $250 and I’m uh a little broke at the moment (E3 was not a cheap trip). I’ll spend my Best Buy gift cards on console games instead, methinks. At least I’ll play those….

Have you held off as well? What are you waiting for?

  1. You didnt like infamous? I thought you were loving it but the ending is really cool you should at least ask greg miller about it or listen to the beyond infamous podcast

  2. I’m definitely planning on the pita vita. Trophy support helps my decision. I’m such a trophy whore.

  3. The whole 3-D thing in movies and gaming is a fad.

I figure if I keep saying that, it will become true.

Anyway, I just bought a regular DS. XL. i. something. and had no interest in dropping another 250 on the same thing with 3-d added since I’m pretty happy with the one I have now. Maybe somewhere down the road, assuming the games become more interesting than ‘let’s see what this would look like in 3-d’ or crappy ports, I’ll snag one then.

I’d agree with the comment above.. iPads are pretty damn awesome.

    • Ha! MAYBE 3D will burn out….in a few thousand years…when the earth asplodes…

I have a DSi, and I haven’t played it in…a year? At least? Nintendo’s software has a lot to do with it, unfortunately =_=

  4. I didn’t hold out with buying it nearly as well as you are and I’ve already noticed myself going weeks at a time without playing it. But I predict myself playing it a ton soon with Ocarina of Time coming out and now that the 3DS eshop has opened up.

    • That’s what I’m scared I would do…not play it for months at a time. But yes, OoT is a great selling point! I’m tempted, but I SHALL RESIST!

  5. I bought a 3DS for OoT and StarFox, hoping they would announce more games for it. Thankfully, the Mario and Luigi’s mansion game look great. I haven’t had a hand held since the original Game Boy and felt it was time to get back into it.

    • See, if I were in your situation, totally justifiable! Luigi’s Mansion 2 was a blast. I’m sure you’ll love it.
