Well, apparently I was absolutely CLUELESS as to what being “self-employed” means – especially when one is driven by a huge motor that disallows one to, like, relax. Seriously. Even though I’m home now more than ever, I’m also WORKING more than ever.
This means yours truly can’t remember the last time she sat down to play videogames for more than an hour, or the last time she laid in bed and read a book. It means I (okay, switching back to first person) am putting in 12+ hour days and starting to develop bags under my eyes.
But I’m loving every minute of it.
(Well, besides the whole “not playing videogames” bit. That kind of sucks, but I guess for now it’s a sacrifice that must be made. At least I’m able to pinch off an hour or so of button mashing here and there.)
Something I’ve learned during the past year and a half or so of running BlondeNerd.com and the We’re Not Dead podcast is that I LOVE social media marketing. It’s not something I ever went to school for and studied, but it’s something I sorta-kinda morphed a passion and talent for. I’ve learned and developed an understanding of how and WHY interacting with others via social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Google +, etc.) is crucial to any website or business, and why it’s absolutely necessary to tap into these if one is trying to build a community of any sort. (For serious. Your “I LOVE POOP” Facebook page isn’t gonna gain any fans unless you market that shit!) (Um, no pun intended.)
So, how does this come into play?
It’s still early, but I’m in the process of launching my own social media marketing busy-ness. ;D
CRAZY, RIGHT? But it’s true – this blonde, dorky, perverted, sarcastic and overall weird chick is launching her own business. Like, WTFBBQ. But on the real, I’m SO excited to get this underway. I have a few potential clients lined up (EEK! CLIENTS! It sounds so real when I say that!) and I’m SO STOKED to start doing this for a living. And to be honest, part of the reason I love social media marketing is because it reminds me of a videogame. It’s like you have this awesome THING (whether it’s a website, product, brand, business, whatever) and you have to utilize certain tools (FB, Twitter, etc.) in order to attract and build an appropriate audience. And once you’ve done that you need to keep them hooked and engaged and make loyal customers/followers/fans out of ‘em so everyone can be BFFs.
Yes. Social media marketing should be the newest addition to the immense library of videogame genres.

(Update: I’ve gotten a few questions regarding this, so I’ll just throw it out there — YES, my ultimate goal is still to find employment within the videogame industry. But I’m confident that I’ll be able to deliver favorable results to my social media clients while pursing my dream job. <3.)

glad to hear about the new business! Its funny when I find something I like doing more than playing games I also start to relate it to a video game. I.E. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is like chess, Art is telling an epic story etc. It’s good to see you found something you enjoy so much, cause that other job just seemed like you did it to pay the bills.

It is the suckles, but it is rewarding. I will give you a hint, it is much easier to manuver the dangerous seas with a co-pilot. You will be like Sheppard, on your own at first but things get much more fun with a team. Take the right path and you will be just fine.
