I have my grandma to thank for introducing me to the world of video games. When I was no more than 5-years-old she showed me Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda and, of course, Mario. She later would go on to gift me titles that would ultimately become some of my all-time favorites, such as Final Fantasy IX, Breath of Fire III, Legend of Legaia, Dark Cloud and more. Basically, without her, I wouldn’t be the gamer I am today.
So thank you, Grandma. I’ll give you credit for this one. ;)
To this day my grandma plays more video games than I do. And whenever we get together our conversations typically revolve around the industry. We reflect on games we used to play, titles I used to watch her play, some of her favorites, my favorites, issues within the industry, “that one game” we could never beat, etc. She’s pretty amazing.
My grandma has agreed to do a written interview with me, and I thought I’d take this opportunity to open the floor to you guys. Is there something you want to ask my 75-year-old gaming grandma? Sound off in the comments below.
Here are a few things that may help tailor your questions:
- She loves RPGs, in fact she’s probably played more hours of Dark Cloud/Dark Cloud 2 than I’ve been alive.
- She’s not a fan of newer systems, and she’s very opinionated about them.
- She can typically be found playing her PS2.
- She’s not a fan of FPS titles.
- Don’t get her going on motion controls…actually, please do. It’s quite entertaining.

She’s a rare breed of her generation. I’m curious to know what ignited her interest in gaming and what has kept that interest through the years.

I would ask her this “if you were being exiled to an island and could only take 2 consoles and 5 games to play for the rest of your life what would they be?” and if your feeling cheeky “and one picture of one grand child.”
I would be curious about her take on the newer consoles like you mentioned, even as young as I am I still find it hard to get into the really new more technologically advanced with all the DLC stuff. Sometimes I just wanna plug in my PS2 and play a disc and not have to worry about internet or co-op play or having to purchase additional content to finish the game. As fun as it is to play with another player across the world or whatever it is still nostalgic for me to plug in another controller and play with a buddy…which haha because no one DOES that anymore! D:

What an awesome lady! I would be curious to know if she’s ever had to deal with other people in her generation disapproving over her playing games and, if so, how she responds to it.

Lemme first say that this is awesome! Second, my question would be what was the first game she ever played that ignited her love of Video Games? and does she still play it? Lastly, Go Brits Grandma! It seems like she’s the type of person whose like “to hell with the conventional way to be and hello to individuality!” and that’s great! which you reminded me….call my own grandma. lol. ugh! I’m a terrible grandson!!
What does she feel has been gained and lost in video games over the years. Ex. story, difficulty, originality, imagination, multiplayer aspects, etc. etc.
