Halo Film Rumors Squashed’ed

Normally regarding the topic of video game film adaptations I’d be all, “YEAH GOOD THING THIS WAS CANNED GRUMBLEGRUMBLEGRUMBLE” due to the non-deniable track record of game-to-film suck, but for a split second I was excited about the thought of a Halo film. (More on that below!) Of course, this was later proved to be a false and dud rumor. Here’s the exchange between Production Weekly and Jim Vejvoda:

“We plan to continue telling the Halo story through innovative channels, but there are no plans for a Halo motion picture at this time,” Microsoft told Eurogamer.

I recently watched Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, and, surprisingly, I super-duper enjoyed it. For being a 10 million dollar budget film I thought it wasn’t shabby at all, and the special effects made me have fratboy-esque outbursts like “OOOOH SHIT!” and “YEEEEAAA-HAAAAAA!” while I was alone in my living room. (For the record, my aforementioned outbursts made me feel embarrassed of myself.) So, my thought process is if I enjoyed Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn I could easily enjoy the fuck out of a big-screen production. Sure, it might not be the best logic but I think Forward Unto Dawn was the first video game to film adaptation I sincerely enjoyed and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to see more.

While I’ve played all of the installments, I’m certainly not an expert on the Halo franchise. So perhaps some of you could offer insight as to whether or not Halo could be successfully adapted into a thing that people go pay money to see in theaters.

Let me know!

  1. I don’t think the vast expanse of the halo/spartan/covenant universe could be properly put across in a 1hr40 film. even if they made a trilogy. I think if anything it should go the way defiance went, do a TV series.

When i think about halo being a Episodic TV series I’m reminded of how awesome babylon5 was and still is. the story telling was awesome in that, and although now it looks a little … OK a lot dated, back in 95/96 when i first saw it, it was epic !

    Halo could do the same.
But picking the right actors is key. Get the wrong person on screen and it will foul up the whole thing. I think that’s why people can’t get Aliens games right. Because there’s so much foundation story been laid already its hard to jump tracks creatively without pissing off the fans.

But i sincerely hope it DOES work. I loved forward unto dawn. what i liked most of all is that Master Chief was acknowledged but had very little screen time keeping the mystique of, “John”

    • Cool, it sounds like the general consensus is that if anything it should be a TV show. Which is a thing that’s happening. Makes sense! Thanks!

  2. the Halo universe is more set for a TV series which is what Microsoft is trying to do. There are so many different stories that can be told and should be told. Like the fact that Master Chief is not the only surviving Spartan. There were three others that survived after the fall of reach with Dr. Halsey. Not to mention the fact that there was a Spartan III program that was built from Dr. Halsey’s research and data. So a TV series is more of the answer you would want than just a 2 hr film.

  3. You know what sounds pretty sweet? A Destiny-related TV show. Yeah, the game isn’t out yet, but it looks like a game that has some serious story depth and would lend itself to a gangster-ass TV show. But yeah, HALO would also be cool, if not a high budget show.

    • Yeah! But that’s just it, isn’t it? There’s so much lore and history and yadda yadda I feel like the possibilities are endless.
