Britt5091 Origins: Oh Hai!

Welcome to Britt5091: Origins, where I dig up old blog posts I used to write for IGN’s community under the username Britt5091. Some posts may make you giggle, some may make your eyes bleed, and some may make you stroke your beard in a pensive manner. All you need to know is that these posts, no matter how terrible some of them may be, ultimately lead to everything I do now.

Oh Hai!

October 20th 2009

Man oh man I feel like I’ve been away for months, which isn’t true, since its only been a little over a week since my last post. Needless to say, I’ve been busy, but thankfully I’ve had just enough time to read your posts and hopefully leave a comment or two.

Since completing Uncharted 2 a little over a week ago, I haven’t had much time to game. This is due to hunting, football games, and life in general. But since I had received Uncharted 2 at no cost, I figured I’d buy Brutal Legend with the money I had originally set aside for Uncharted.

There are a vast range of emotions regarding Double Fine’s latest. Some are thrilled with the game and others are disappointed, not so much at the story but at the RTS aspect.

I have to admit, I’m struggling a little too. I don’t think it’s the RTS gameplay that’s turning me off (I did my research; I knew RTS was going to be implemented, so I can’t whine about that) but I honestly think it’s because I was so impressed by Uncharted 2. That game really blew everything else out of the water, and I can’t help but have unreal expectations for everything else at the moment.

Not fair, I know. Preconceptions aside, Brutal Legend IS great and the story is fun. Uncharted 2 is, simply, a different game. So to compare the two is ridiculous. But a chick can’t help the way she feels.

Anyway, there have been enough bras and panties thrown at Naughty Dog to last them a lifetime, so I’ll move on. But I have one last question regarding all of this: What do you think about Brutal Legend releasing the same day as Uncharted 2? I’m not sure who claimed October 13th first, but if it came down to running against Among Thieves or waiting a few weeks only to become lost in the mass that is Modern Warfare 2? Well, it’s a no brainer.

Switching gears completely:

How many times has this happened in your life?

The spotlight is on you. You may be interviewing for a job, participating in a group discussion or attending a corporate meeting. A question is directed your way and people, strangers to you, turn their head to watch, anticipating your response. As you begin to speak, your mind completely draws a blank. Silence fills the room, and you feel yourself starting to break a light sweat. Your mind is going 90 miles per hour; however nothing logical is coming together. You know they’re watching you, waiting, and that distracts you from…shit, what was the original question?

Okay, so where did THAT come from? Long story short, last Thursday I was at an audition. I was in a room with three other people. Two of the people were ‘judges’ so to speak, and I would be debating with the other person. And the topic of debate was something near and dear to my heart — gaming.

At this point we’re just waiting for the judges to give us the go ahead. We hadn’t been given our topic yet. Oh yeah, the entire debate was going to be recorded.

I’m preparing for a political question about the industry, like my views on sex/drugs/violence in games, is Activision really a money whore, what do you think of all digital distribution, etc., so I’m getting in the zone to discuss some heavy game politics.

As the little red recording light turns on, they give us our question.

“Mario or Sonic. Who would win?”

I flat lined.

Honestly I can’t remember half of what I said. I was defending Mario, and the guy I was debating against was extremely quiet and monotone, therefore I had no fuel to get my fire going. I was completely thrown off guard and for whatever reason was not able to get my mind right.

Fail. I was surprised too, because I’m not camera shy at all. It was just one of ’em moments! And you know how it works — right after I left that room a million thoughts, ideas and arguments hit me. I’ll cringe over it for a few days, but I’ll get over it. Ugh. 😉

Finally, Fozzy has asked me to interview him. That’s right; I get full control and say so over his Late Night stage for a day. One can only assume he was under the influence when he asked lil’ ol’  me because he has no id

Update

June 19th, 2012

Ah, Brutal Legend – a game I was SO looking forward to but a game I could never must up the energy to finish. Such a shame. As far as that audition goes, I’m obviously way over it and a half but I had completely forgotten about that night! It seems like such a blip in the past now, but at the time I remember being borderline devestated. I was so bummed out that I blanked. I WANT to say it was for thatguywiththeglasses.com.

Too bad they didn’t ask me about Dragon Age: Origins (although the game hadn’t released yet…). I woulda blown their brains into chunks all over the wall behind them.
