Sequels

Gotta love reddit

Ha, isn’t this true?

I’m not saying every sequel is crap; that couldn’t be farther than the truth. This diagram (sarcastically) encompasses the attitude gamers tend to have towards sequels. It always seems to be one of those “You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t” type of situations, doesn’t it? If you leave in too many elements from the first game, it’s a “fucking rehash”, but if you change some things up–and it doesn’t go over very well–it becomes a ruined franchise. SighSighSigh.

I’ve never found myself favoring originals over sequels, or vice versa. I personally enjoyed Mass Effect 2 more than Mass Effect (despite the fact Mr. Alenko made an oh-so-minimal appearance) but found Dragon Age 2 to be nothing but an expansion of Dragon Age: Origins. I thought Uncharted 2 was more polished than Uncharted, but couldn’t get into Fable 2 like I could with Fable.

Thoughts?

It just depends on what you like; same gameplay but different situations (“rehashes”) or added gameplay play features and etc (“ruined franchises”). Personally, some of the greatest games to me are ones that have an okay, or sucky, first game with a interesting concept, then improves the game in it’s sequels. But nothing can beat the nostalgic feel of growing up with the crappy first game of a franchise.
