Nintendo Direct – 1/23/2013

I recently had a nice (albeit text) discussion with a prominent member of the gaming industry about Nintendo. While we remained pretty level headed, we went back and forth about Nintendo and how theyreally need to get their asses in gear with their latest console in the sense that they need to build some hype. Personally, I find myself scratching my head, looking around and thinking, “Okay, I bought a Wii U WHY?”

And then I remind myself I bought a Wii U for Zelda, for Mario. I bought the Wii U in hopes that MAYBE a Pokemon console game will be announced. I bought a Wii U because, well, I still believe Nintendo has some of the best first-party software around and DAMMIT I want them to blow my mind like they used to. And let’s face it — I bought a Wii U because I’m a hapless video game collector who needs to own everything. But nonetheless, even though I know Zelda and another Mario Galaxy-esque game are in works (can’t be so sure about the console Pokemon title, though!) I currently have nothing concrete to look forward to, meaning, um, there aren’t any trailers, teaser shots or rampant rumors floating about.

But I hope after tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct that all changes. And I hate to be so vague, but I have a hunch that tomorrow morning is going to leave all of us Wii U owners and prospective buyers very pleased. I already have my alarm clock set for 5:45 tomorrow morning!

What are your thoughts? Are you excited, apprehensive? Let me know!

You can catch the direct at 9 AM EST here.

  • I bought my 3DS as soon as they announced Luigi’s Mansion 2. Finally, 2+ years later, I’ll have it in March. Have yet to buy the WiiU becuase of the launch lineup. Didn’t want to replay all the games I had played through and beat and NSMBWU did not attract me. If a Mario Galaxy or LoZ game is announced tomorrow, I’ll buy a WiiU asap. Is it weird that the Wii U is readily available in stores or did they just over produce units to avoid the issues of the Wii launch? Either way, I’ll be watching the stream tomorrow.

Yeah, I’ve noticed there hasn’t been an issue re: lack of Wii U consoles. Even a few days after launch I saw them on shelves. But yeah brah, I hope after tomorrow you’ll have motivation to pick one up!

  • What do you know, and how much should I hate you for knowing?!

I’m a little curious about how Nintendo handles the WiiU this year. I’m having doubts about their ability to maintain their market share with this console. I’m not sure exactly who they are trying to target with it. They don’t seem to be pushing as hard for the casual market as they did with the Wii. Most of the casual gamers I know and a lot of people that I have stopped and asked in stores out of curiosity have no idea what the WiiU is. The most common answer I get when asking what the WiiU is is “Yea, it’s a new tablet thing for my Wii.” I’m anxious to see how it holds up when Sony and Microsoft come out of the gate with their next systems. If Nintendo is trying to target the same group of people that are holding out for the “PS4” or “XBox 720” then I think they are going to have a tough road. And in order to keep their dedicated Nintendo fans interested, they need to start making some serious game announcements soon.

AGREED!!! Nintendo has to start making noise before the other consoles overshadow them. Get us EXCITED, Ninty!
