I’m Liking the Sound of Resident Evil 7 Already

Well, ain’t that clever?!

Here’s the dealio, belio. I’m a HUGE Resident Evil fan, and Capcom could probably shit on a plate, stick a flag that has “RESIDENT EVIL 7!1” scribbled on it into the steamy pile and I’d rave for days. It’s kind of like a blind devotion. But I know Resident Evil 6 was quite, erm, “different”, and I’m glad to hear Capcom has been listening to fan feedback. During an interview with MCV Michael Pattison, former Capcom Senior VP of Marketing who recently joined Sony, made folks feel a wee better about the future of Resident Evil.

“We have obviously seen the consumer response and the PR response. There was some great positives out of that, but it was a mixed bag, as we saw from the review scores. We have got to take that on-board, we can’t ignore that, and we have to take that onto the next game when we make the next Resident Evil.

“With Resident Evil 6 specifically, we probably put too much content in there, there were comments from consumers that said it felt bloated. The Leon missions went down very well, and because we did Resident Evil Revelations on 3DS, there was a cry out for us to focus our attention on survival horror, rather than be too many things to all people. You’ll find where we go next will likely be more targeted at our core fanbase.

“A lot is said about the saturation of this zombie, post-apocalyptic survival horror. But it is still alive and well. The Last of Us shows a good direction of what the consumers want. Tomb Raider as well, we spoke to R&D and they looked at that and they enjoyed that experience. I think that proves there is still a strong market for that sort of content.”

You, sir, hit the nail on the head. Resident Evil 6 tried to do too much, and in a way that wasn’t very Resident Evil-y. Like, Chris’ campaign. I felt like the content was great, but the gameplay was executed in such a way it pretty much felt like you were playing Gears of War’s younger, less-developed brother. Nah’ming? And Jake’s had some fun stuff in there (the hospital portion threw in a few innovative wrenches) but it was short lived and the majority of the campaign wasn’t quite as exciting.

I’ve sung my praises regarding Leon’s RE6 campaign MANY ‘a time, so I won’t kick a dead Elcor here, but after playing Leon’s campaign AND recently finishing Resident Evil: Revelations I’m, like, craving more of that old-school Resident Evil survival horror goodness. I hate to admit it, but I forgot how well Capcom does survival horror! I mean, playing RE: Revelations was just like picking up Resident Evil 1 or Resident Evil 2 for the first time, and it was so damn charming and so damn good. If they can take some of that nostalgic charm and inject into the modern day awesomeness of Leon’s campaign CAPCOM WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE AND WE WILL ALL SUCCUMB TO UMBRELLA IN A MATTER OF MONTHS.
