E3 2014 | Legend of Zelda Wii U Reveal Trailer

I...I can't type anything down that would come even remotely close to depicting the amount of excite and SQUEE! and other raging hormones that are coursing through my body at this very moment. BUT FUCK IT LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS. HOW DO WE TALK ABOUT THIS. I WANT TO TALK ABOUT EVERYTHING AT ONCE AND SPEW IT OUT LIKE WORD VOMIT.

Zelda Background

  • This world (correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember hearing the land referred to as Hyrule) is pretty vast and all signs point to an open world. This means much romping and exploring and finding things I don't know what to do with. Whiiich is actually one of my favorite things about the Zelda franchise. I really enjoy figuring out WTF things is and WTF I'm going to use them for. Plus, it's just magical to explore a land like (I said LIKE) Hyrule.
  • The typical formula of "Go to THIS dungeon and then THIS temple" has been axed and players should be able to tackle the world in whatever order they see fit.
  • The monster chasing Link (and the horse, which I'm going to assume is Epona) is...like...a robot? Shooting laser beams? ...I'll take it.  That's quite different from what I'm used to seeing in Zelda, but hey. I'll keep an open mind.
  • The art style looks like a mature version of Wind Waker and Skyward Sword's lovechild. Sure, it's not the uber-realistic and dark gritty look I was hoping for, but if there's anything Wind Waker has taught me it's that GRAPHICS DON'T MATTER IN A ZELDA GAME, YO.
  • I can't decide how old Link looks. 17ish? 18?

Zelda

In any case, we know next to nothing right now but it's still fun to speculate. IT'S FUCKING ZELDA.

Let me know what you think about this reveal below! <3

  • I honestly can’t think of anything but “OH MY BUTTS”. That quasi-cell shaded look works quite well. The idea of a more open ended Zelda game is just the “innovation” the franchise needs. Sure they’ll probably still lock out the higher tiered items with dungeon item requirements (i.e. Need a boomerang to get to the room that has the last key you need to open the door that gets you this games variety of hookshot…) But I’m fine with that. If Nintendo graces us with Hyrule Warriors to get through this fall/xmas season and we get this next iteration of LoZ next year. I imagine I can hold out just fine.

As long as we don’t go to close to the GTA franchise and are getting billions of calls from various NPC’s to go bowling or the bar on our Ocarinas.

      +100. /salute

      • britt5091

        TOTALLY. Yes. /salute

  • InertiaBrien

  • IT. LOOKS. AMAZING.

    • britt5091

The art is growing on me the more I gaze upon it.

  • I just hope the game is diverse enough and offers plenty of things to do IN THE WORLD besides just running from point A to point B LOOKING at the world. There needs to be fun activities dammit!

    • britt5091

Yeah! Tons of minigames, lots of nooks to explore, heart pieces to find, UMF.

  • bird4027

This trailer just got me excited! It is different of course, but in the right direction. Like you, I was hoping for another one of those darker titles like Twilight Princess, but hey…it is an OPEN WORLD ZELDA GAME!!! Love it!

    • britt5091

      Exactly! I’ll totally take it!

  • Blase

Looks pretty sweet. I’d almost consider exploring Wii U for this.

    • britt5091

Right on! Let me know if you get one!

  • Johnny Salas

I thought I would be, but I’m not at all disappointed by the lack of hyper realistic visuals! I really hope we get more awesome variations on conventional weapons, like that BAD. ASS. laser bow! And can link really jump off epona and shoot like that in game!? Is Epona really the batmobile!? SO MANY QUESTIONS! NOT ENOUGH ANSWERS! NEEEEED. MOOOOAAAAAR!

    • britt5091

YEAH! That bow is gnarly. Like, I’ve never seen anything like that in a Zelda game before. djakfjdalkfjdlka. MOAR INFO NAOOOOOO

There are several things I want to discuss, and I hope you’ll indulge me a few moments:

    1. If it is a large game, I can imagine the traditional means of loading a save and starting at Hyrule Castle, your house, or an exit of a dungeon/temple. I’m hoping you can create your own custom spawn points throughout the game so you can continue exploring particular areas without spending 10 minutes retracing your steps, finding your path blocked by Octotanks, or getting lost.

    2. This idea came to be a long time ago, but: what if these weren’t just “save points”, but safe houses? I can imagine there’s a lot of tools, items, and materials to find throughout the game. It’d be nice if you could store spare rupees, arrows, bombs, and collectibles in a safe house for safe keeping. You lose your life or turn off the game, spawn at that safe house, then continue your exploration just like before.

    3. And then it occurred to me. What if you could share safe houses with your friends through the miiverse? Decorate them! Put up a billboard so people can write notes to you! Share some of your spare items with the less fortunate! Maybe even help draw part of the map for them! The safe houses will appear in your Hyrule at the same position your friend on the Miiverse has placed it! It would add a social dynamic to the game I think could be incredibly fun!

    4. I’m really, really hoping this world is huge. Elder Scrolls huge. Red Dead Redemption huge. Shadow of the Colossus huge. I want to explore, experience beautiful sights, and find incredible treasure! It would be incredibly cool if I saw a land formation that begged to be explored and could just find a path, walk there, and find a shrine or a temple waiting to be explored! Again, Elder Scrolls kind of experience.

4a. As an aside, Skyward Sword had huge environments, but the majority of them were included or covered in the storytelling. As a result, the game felt incredibly linear. I would love it if there were areas we could explore for exploration’s sake, having no relevance to the story-at-large. This way we can take a break and just explore.

    5. The combat scene where Link jumped off his horse and smashed into the Octotank was supremely cool! I hope there is more acrobatic work with Epona, like something out of Shadow of the Colossus! And that arrow was… supremely awesome! It was so intricate and precise! Maybe we’ll be able to craft our own arrows!

    6. With all this focus on exploration, I am really truly hoping there is a focus on combat mechanics. Wind Waker had the best combat, imo. Every enemy had unique reactions/counters to your weapons, especially Darknuts. I hope combat is given the level of attention and detail the world has.

    7. How are we controlling everything? Are we doing this with the GamePad? Will it somehow incorporate the Wii MotionPlus effects from Skyward Sword somehow? And will new or old tools be implemented with GamePad functionality?

    8. If there are maps… will there be Tingle? YMMV

    9. A lot of Zelda games involve accessing new areas with tools to acquire heart pieces, solve puzzles, and collect items. I’d really hate to travel for 10, 15, or 30 minutes, and find myself at a location which requires the hookshot or boomerang to continue. I don’t want to leave the area, find a hookshot in a dungeon, then check my map and forget to cover that area again with my updated inventory. Speaking of which, if there’re only 20 hearts, how hard will it be to find heart pieces in a Hyrule that is so huge!?

    10. On the other hand, I see mounds of potential for all the platforming tools: being able to climb trees in a forest using the hookshot or grappling hook. New climbing gear for scaling cliffs and mountainsides. A magic winglider to help traverse and find new areas unnoticed through on-foot expeditions.

That’s all I’m thinking of. I believe this game has a lot of potential, and could be as memorable as cult favorites like Wind Waker, A Link to the Past, and Majora’s Mask.

  • Marcus Green

I don’t like Link’s faaaace. I hope I can choose to keep that awesome cloak on. But Nintendo looked deep into my soul and gave me what I wanted. They pretty much have me on knees to do with whatever they please now.

    • britt5091

Well, apparently now it might *not* be Link. WHOAAAAAAAAAA

But yeah, open world? Yes plz. Done. Nintendo can do with us what they please.

  • Jonathan Lindberg

I wish it were, Zelda/Sheik but alas… It’s confirmed Link.
It turns out that Aonuma was just kidding. When asked about his comment by MMGN, the producer chuckled and responded:
“It’s not that I said that it wasn’t Link. It’s that I never said that it was Link. It’s not really the same thing, but I can understand how it could be taken that way. It seems like it has kind of taken off where people are saying ‘oh it’s a female character’ and it just kind of grew. But my intent in saying that was humour. You know, you have to show Link when you create a trailer for a Zelda announcement.”
