Dragon Age: Redemption is a thing? HELL YES!

By now it should be embedded into your soul that I am possibly one of the biggest fans of BioWare’s Dragon Age: Origins. If there is an object with “Dragon Age” slapped on it, chances are I own it. I’m not kidding….I own a Dragon Age letter opener. Anyway, this morning some very interesting news hit the interwebs; Felicia Day (do I really need to tell you who she is?) is writing AND staring in a new web series titled Dragon Age: Redemption.

Details are barely trickling through, but this is what we know so far: Day plays as an elven assassin by the name of Tallis. “Tallis is headstrong, she fights dirty, and she has a really sarcastic sense of humor,” Day told USA Today. “I wanted to bring a modern sensibility to a fantasy character in a fantasy world.”. Dragon Age: Redemption follows Tallis as she searches the land of Ferelden (the setting for Dragon Age: Origins as well as Dragon age II) for a “renegade magician” (or, in Dragon Age terms, a maleficar).

“I am an organic gamer and I love games, and I particularly love this franchise,” says Day. “I put every single effort into making this something that gamers will be proud of. Even though we were constrained a lot as a Web series, none of the people who were involved took that as a constraint. They took that as a challenge.”

The six-episode run will hit the web this year.

You get all that?!

I think Felicia can pull this off (and pull it off well) for numerous reasons: For starters, Felicia knows how to work this sort of medium. To say The Guild is a success would be a understatement. Felicia has also stated several times she is a hardcore Dragon Age fan (but not as hardcore as me…amirite?). BioWare has also expressed their confidence in her, and since I worship BioWare, that’s good enough for me.

I’m also looking at it from this angle—it sounds like the characters we will be introduced to in DA: Redemption are brand-spankin-new. I think a lot of the disappointment we usually feel from game-to-film adaptations stems from the poor translations of our favorite characters to the big screen. With brand new characters, we’re more likely to accept a character instead of constantly critiquing. Also, Ferelden is such a vast place, the story we followed in Dragon Age: Origins was only one of many. If Day is as big of a Dragon Age: Origins fan as she claims to be, I have confidence she will create a realistic “side-story”.

Get excited!
