Moms and Nintendo

Do you get it? Huh huh huh?

My mom would sometimes yell at me for “spending too much time playing Nintendo” instead of doing homework, chores, going outside, etc. But I would always, ALWAYS laugh (which would just get me into more trouble) because it was always “Nintendo”. I would be playing Final Fantasy IX on PlayStation or Sonic on Genesis and I’d hear her screech, “SHUT THAT NINTENDO OFF!”

In fact, a few weeks ago she called to see what her nerdy daughter was up to. In a voice I would use to talk to a preschooler, I told her I was playing this thing called Skyrim. She just chuckled and responded with, “You and that damn Nintendo.”

Some things never change. 😉

What’s even better is when parents have trouble pronouncing Nintendo.

Not only does my Dad still call everything a Nintendo to this very day, but he says it like “Nih-tendo.” That “N” totally disappears from the word. It’s so cute!

Also, my mom calls every handheld gaming console a Game Boy.

I think a lot of it has to do with the transition from the old Atari 2600 days. My parents both played that a lot with me and my bro, but the NES was too complicated for them to handle. It’s like their gaming brain was frozen in time.

    Old people, amirite?

OMG! Yes! I forgot my mom does the same–every handheld is a gameboy!

With age comes wisdom, my young friend. When I was 23, I was a complete ball of nerves and insecurity. I’ve since evolved into a more calmer and confident pokemon. 🙂

Also, I’m not getting any younger, so I may as well be happy to just be alive, right? It’s my 34th damn birthday tomorrow, so be nice! 😛

  • So true.
